Dear Friends, This week, I have been blown away by the beauty of the leaves. While I was away, I was afraid that I would miss them, but I didn't. Once the fog cleared on my way back from Fall is my favorite time of year. It is in fall that we are reminded of the bounty of the harvest, see the changing of the leaves and get to breathe in the fresh crisp air that is so typical of autumn. Nights are great for sleeping as the cool temperatures allow us to snuggle in our blankets, and daytimes are bright with golden sunshine. It is also a time of gratitude and thanksgiving. The themes of gratitude and thanksgiving flow through the pages of scripture and our hymnal. The nomadic Hebrew tribes found ways to express their thanks to God for making it through another year. They offered sacrifices and sang songs of praise. The early Christians said liturgies of gratitude for their survival and for the blessings they received from God. Both the native Americans and the first settlers in our land had rituals of praise and thanksgiving. Enjoy the panoramic color show, breathe in the cool fall air, and offer your own praises to God who gives us life that we may enjoy all things. Keep the faith, Sue
FIRST CHURCH NEWS Vol. 55, No. 50
From Robin Spencer, Anniversary Committee Member:
The first meeting house of our church stood on site of the present Rte. 9, just west of It was plain, 80' x 64', had a steep roof without bell, belfry or cupola and, except for windows, "resembled a nice barn". It was begun in 1756 and completed in 1757. It was built over and repainted after the revival of 1784-85. The pulpit was on the right, opposite a large double door, had a huge sounding board with stairs on each side ornamented with vines and grapes. There was a broad aisle with a tier of pews on each side with square pews up the center where parishioners sat facing each other. There was no carpet and no heat, but foot warmers were brought in. A shed stood nearby for horses.
