HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS!

On Monday, October 29th, we will have another party for children ages Pre-K through 3rd grade. Children from our community will be joining us from 3:30 - 5:00 pm in the Fireside Room for more Halloween fun. Put your costumes on and come sing songs, eat snacks, play games and make a craft or two. Hmmm, what costume shall I wear?

Please remember to take your UNICEF boxes with you when you trick or treat next week. If you did not get one yet and would like one, let me know on Sunday. All boxes will be due back to church on Nov. 4th. Thanks for your help!

A very big thank you to Dick Zink who purchased and donated some wonderful art supplies to the church school program. We have been putting them to good use!

And, a big thank you to Carolyn McElravy and her children who recently donated a beautiful handmade puppet theater to our program. It is being used in our Theater/Media Workshop this rotation. The students are loving it!

Have a safe and happy Halloween,

October 24, 2007

Dear Friends,

This week, I have been blown away by the beauty of the leaves. While I was away, I was afraid that I would miss them, but I didn't. Once the fog cleared on my way back from Bangor on Tuesday, I was treated to a glorious patchwork of oranges, reds, yellows and browns accented by the evergreens. This is our annual rite of passage from summer into fall - a tapestry that could only be created by God. I not only didn't miss it, but it followed me home from the woods of Maine all the way to the northeast hills of Connecticut. And now, we are surrounded by it!

Fall is my favorite time of year. It is in fall that we are reminded of the bounty of the harvest, see the changing of the leaves and get to breathe in the fresh crisp air that is so typical of autumn. Nights are great for sleeping as the cool temperatures allow us to snuggle in our blankets, and daytimes are bright with golden sunshine. It is also a time of gratitude and thanksgiving.

The themes of gratitude and thanksgiving flow through the pages of scripture and our hymnal. The nomadic Hebrew tribes found ways to express their thanks to God for making it through another year. They offered sacrifices and sang songs of praise. The early Christians said liturgies of gratitude for their survival and for the blessings they received from God. Both the native Americans and the first settlers in our land had rituals of praise and thanksgiving.

Enjoy the panoramic color show, breathe in the cool fall air, and offer your own praises to God who gives us life that we may enjoy all things.

Keep the faith,

Sue

FIRST CHURCH NEWS

Vol. 55, No. 50

From Robin Spencer,  Anniversary Committee Member:

The first meeting house of our church stood on site of the present Rte. 9, just west of Fairview Cemetery.  Early church historian/genealogist Alfred Andrews wrote:  "It had a pleasant view and was beautified by surrounding oak and hickory trees left of the primitive forest."

It was plain, 80' x 64', had a steep roof without bell, belfry or cupola and, except for windows, "resembled a nice barn". It was begun in 1756 and completed in 1757.  It was built over and repainted after the revival of 1784-85.  The pulpit was on the right, opposite a large double door, had a huge sounding board with stairs on each side ornamented with vines and grapes.  There was a broad aisle with a tier of pews on each side with square pews up the center where parishioners sat facing each other.  There was no carpet and no heat, but foot warmers were brought in. A shed stood nearby for horses.
